Android 4.4 is designed to run fast, smooth, and responsively on a much broader range of devices than ever before — including on millions of entry-level devices around the world that have as little as 512MB RAM.
KitKat streamlines every major component to reduce memory use and introduces new APIs and tools to help you create innovative, responsive, memory-efficient applications.
OEMs building the next generation of Android devices can take advantage oftargeted recommendations and options to run Android 4.4 efficiently, even on low-memory devices. Dalvik JIT code cache tuning, kernel samepage merging (KSM), swap to zRAM, and other optimizations help manage memory. New configuration options let OEMs tune out-of-memory levels for processes, set graphics cache sizes, control memory reclaim, and more.
In Android itself, changes across the system improve memory management and reduce memory footprint. Core system processes are trimmed to use less heap, and they now more aggressively protect system memory from apps consuming large amounts of RAM. When multiple services start at once — such as when network connectivity changes — Android now launches the services serially, in small groups, to avoid peak memory demands.
For developers, Android 4.4 helps you deliver apps that are efficient and responsive on all devices. A new API,ActivityManager.isLowRamDevice(), lets you tune your app's behavior to match the device's memory configuration. You can modify or disable large-memory features as needed, depending on the use-cases you want to support on entry-level devices. Learn more about optimizing your apps for low-memory devices here.
New tools give also give you powerful insight into your app's memory use. The procstats tool details memory use over time, with run times and memory footprint for foreground apps and background services. An on-device view is also available as a new developer option. The meminfo tool is enhanced to make it easier to spot memory trends and issues, and it reveals additional memory overhead that hasn't previously been visible.

Google to Increase Focus on Wearable Tech, Releasing SDK in Two Weeks

It’s no secret that wearable technology is the new “it thing” for 2014. Looking back at this year’s CES only reinforces this, as we saw quite a few new players like Omate and new versions of old favorites like the Pebble Steel. Looking back to when Android 4.4 was on the verge of release, we discussed a report speculating that KitKat would (among other things) bring an increased focus on wearable technology. KitKat has now been available on various consumer devices for nearly two-and-a-half months, and we haven’t heard much in the way of official support from the big GOOG, but this is about to change.
Today at SXSW, Google SVP of Android and Chrome Sundar Pichai said that Google is approximately two weeks away from releasing a developer SDK to make it easier for OEMs to create wearables that run on Android OS. While there was unfortunately no mention of the rumored LG Nexus Watch that keeps popping up in the digital tech tabloids every now and then, this is still exciting news, as current Android-based Smartwatch efforts like the Galaxy Gear haven’t yet found much commercial success.
There is unfortunately very little known about what the SDK will entail other than standardization for common protocols by which devices and their sensors can communicate with the OS. However, it is undoubtedly a great first step in bringing smartwatches to the masses.
What are your thoughts on Google’s new-found interest in wearables? Would you be interested in a Nexus Watch? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

T-Mobile Galaxy S 4 Receives 4.4.2, OTA Mirrored!

Just four days ago, the T-Mobile Galaxy Note 3received an OTA update to Android 4.4.2. This naturally lead many to wonder when Samsung’s other flagship device on T-Mobile would see a similar update. That time is here, folks, as Android 4.4.2 has now started making its way out to consumer devices.
The update comes in the form of build number M919UVUFNB4, replacing the previous Android 4.3-based M919UVUEMK2 build. The update weighs in at a decently sized 388 MB, and it brings all of the same goodies we’ve seen on other SGS4 KitKat device updates such as an ever so slightly changed UI, wireless printing, KitKat-related performance tweaks, and more.
The update is currently making its way to consumer devices in the form of a staged rollout. Thus, not every device will receive the OTA immediately. Thankfully, XDA Senior Member ShinySide was kind enough to mirror the update for those who haven’t received the OTA.
Make your way over to the original thread to get in on the discussion, and those looking for the mirror should visit this post. Kernel developers will be a bit sad to learn that the GPL-mandated kernel source code for the T-Mobile SGS4 has not yet been updated to KitKat. That said, we can’t imagine that it will be too much longer, as Samsung is usually quick to release the required source bits.

Track Your Time Wasting Apps with Frequency

Sometimes, we all like to sit back and enjoy a bit of diversion with our favorite mobile apps. Be it chatting with friends on Facebook, binge watching every episode of House of Cards on Netflix, or sitting down for a few hours with Flappy Birds, we all find ourselves wasting a bit more time than we’d like from time to time. Wouldn’t it be great if you could track your time spent in individual apps to better optimize your day? Now you can.
Frequency by XDA Forum Member AggieDev is a simple application that shows you  a list of your installed applications and how long you’ve spent in each. The list is presented in descending order, in order to best highlight the apps that consume the greatest amount of your time.
Frequency offers a good amount of customization to better fit your needs. It allows you to display which apps you’ve used most in the current day, past week, past month, past three months, past year, and all time. Additionally, it allows you to hide certain applications that you want excluded from consideration such as, let’s say, your launcher. The application also allows you to configure its accuracy. And since increasing accuracy also consumes more battery, so lower accuracy may be a better choice for some.
If you’ve ever wondered about your time-sucks, head over to the application thread and objectively track them down!

Android 4.3 Jelly Bean Logo
Sony Mobile would be one of the first companies to announce the upcoming Android updates for their devices. It started rolling out the Android 4.2.2 update for the Xperia Z and the Xperia ZL starting last month. Now it has confirmed that the Xperia ZR and the Xperia Tablet Z would start receiving Android 4.2 from early August. It has also confirmed the list of devices that would get the Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) update.
List of Xperia devices that would get Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) update
  • Xperia Z
  • Xperia ZL
  • Xperia ZR
  • Xperia Tablet Z
  • Xperia SP
  • Xperia Z Ultra
Another good news is that they are planning to update the select (2012) Xperia devices running 4.1 directly to 4.3, skipping the Android 4.2. The company said that they would reveal more details about the list of devices soon. Sony started rolling out the Android 4.1 update for the 2012 Xperia devices starting from February earlier this year.
It has also detailed the Android 4.3 process and promised faster upgrade times. It says that the software upgrade process has two phases, the first one is the Bring up phase and the Test, and second being the certification and approval phase. Sony delayed the ICS roll out, and accepts that it took time for, certification and approval phase that is the most time consuming process. They say that they have improved upgrade process in place that would let them deliver the updates faster.
Sony did not reveal the exact time-frame for the roll out for these devices, hope they would provide more details soon. The roll out might vary across different carriers and countries.
